Annual Green Chemistry Conference slated June 21-23 in Washington, D.C.

WHAT: 15th Annual Green Chemistry & Engineering Conference (www.gcande.org)

WHEN: June 21-23, 2011

WHERE: Capital Hilton Hotel, located in downtown Washington, D.C.

WHO: This annual conference is organized by the American Chemical Society’s (ACS) Green Chemistry Institute® (ACS GCI), a world leader in advocating for the implementation of green chemistry and engineering into all aspects of the global chemical enterprise. ACS, with more than 163,000 members worldwide, is the world’s largest scientific society and one of the world’s leading sources of authoritative scientific information.

HOW: To learn more about and/or register for the conference, go to www.gcande.org.

This year’s conference, an official International Year of Chemistry (IYC) 2011 event, will be held in partnership with the 5th International Conference on Green and Sustainable Chemistry. With the theme of “Global Challenges: Green Chemistry Solutions,” the conference will feature more than 340 presentations focusing on more than 20 areas enhanced by green chemistry and green engineering solutions, including:

Auto Industry

Green Analytical Chemistry

Methods for Assessing Green
Chemicals & Materials

Biocatalysis for Green Processes

Last year’s conference attracted nearly 500 attendees from 17 countries around the globe.

On Monday evening, June 20, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will announce the winners of the 2011 Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Awards. This award was established to recognize and promote innovative chemical technologies that prevent pollution and have broad applicability in industry.

Other conference highlights will include:

  • Keynote addresses by Paul Anastas, Assistant Administrator for the Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Research and Development (ORD)/Science Advisor to the Agency, and widely known as “the Father of Green Chemistry;” Janine Benyus, environmentalist, author, innovation consultant, and founder of The Biomimicry Institute; and H. Fisk Johnson, Chairman and CEO of S.C. Johnson
  • A full day of programming for undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral green chemistry and engineering students
  • An interactive outreach event for metro Washington, D.C., area school children
