When the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) convenes its annual meeting in San Diego April 12-16, it will attract more than 17,000 participants from 60 countries to review the latest research, discoveries, and technologies in basic, translational, and clinical cancer research.

The conference agenda includes an estimated 6,000 abstracts, more than 500 invited presentations, poster sessions, and an exhibition. Scientific award lectures, grant writing workshops, networking events, and educational sessions will round out the comprehensive program. The program will include reviews of innovative research approaches, novel technologies, therapies in the pipeline, clinical trials, and new approaches to cancer prevention.

AACR reports that basic cancer research drives cancer medicine and it is increasingly influenced by clinical observations. In addition, the organization sees the fields of molecular and genetic epidemiology as influencing research protocols in both the laboratory and the clinic. Key areas of study include signaling pathways, cellular microenvironments, proteomics, genomics, molecular biology, and biomarkers.

Conference topics include:

  • New Concepts in Organ Site Research
  • Drug Development Track: New Drugs on the Horizon
  • Clinical Plenary Session: Breakthroughs in Clinical Research
  • Clinical Plenary Session: Breakthroughs in Phase I Clinical Trials
  • Clinical Plenary Session: Phase II Proof of Concept Clinical Trials
  • Basic Science – Clinical Interface Sessions: Pathways to Progress
  • From Chemistry to the Clinic: Pathways for Drug Discovery and Development

Methods Workshops include sessions on:

  • Imaging
  • Molecular Analysis from Formalin-fixed Paraffin-embedded Tissue Blocks
  • Translational Bioinformatics: Bytes to Bedside and Back
  • High-Throughput Screening
  • Molecular Cancer Epidemiology
  • New Technologies for the Development of Preclinical Mouse Models of Cancer
  • Structure-based Drug Design: An Indispensable Tool for Anticancer Drug Discovery

Meet-the-Experts sessions include:

  • Cell Cycle in CNS Development and Cancer
  • The Changing Pattern of Cancer Incidence, Mortality, and Survival
  • From Translation to Transformation: Control of mRNA Translation and Cancer
  • The Kinome and Development of Protein Kinase Inhibitors
  • Modeling Cancer in the Mouse
  • Metabolism of Cell Growth: The Warburg Effect Revisited
  • Molecular Mechanisms Underlying BreastTumor Heterogeneity
  • Nitric Oxide: A Ubiquitous Molecule That Plays Multiple Roles in Cancer
  • Oncology Trials for Drug Development: Challenges and Opportunities
  • Promotion of Inflammation-associated Tumor Development through RB
  • Proteomic Biomarkers: New Technology–New Dimensions of Information
  • Targeting Apoptosis for Cancer Therapy
