CFIA/Expanded Health Hazard Alert: Additional Codes of Daniella Brand Mangoes Distributed Nationally May Contain Salmonella Braenderup Bacteria

The public warning issued on August 28, 2012, has been further expanded to include additional product codes and dates of sale.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is warning the public not to consume the Daniella brand mangoes described below because they may be contaminated with Salmonella Braenderup bacteria.

The affected Daniella brand mangoes, product of Mexico, were sold as individual fruit or as a part of a multi-pack with a sticker bearing brand Daniella and one of the following PLU numbers: 3114, 4051, 4311, 4584 or 4959. These mangoes were sold at various retail stores between July 12 and up to and including August 29, 2012.

These mangoes may have been distributed nationally.

Consumers may find it difficult to determine which of the Daniella brand mangoes are affected by this recall. You are advised to contact the retailer to find out if you have the affected mangoes.

This recall is attributed to a recall of certain lots of Daniella mangoes initiated by Splendid Products, a produce distributor located in Burlingame, California. Please visit the following links for further information and product photos:

The CFIA is working with all potential Canadian importers to have the affected mangoes removed from the marketplace.

There have been several confirmed illnesses associated with the consumption of these mangoes.

Food contaminated with Salmonella may not look or smell spoiled. Consumption of food contaminated with these bacteria may cause salmonellosis, a foodborne illness. In young children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems, salmonellosis may cause serious and sometimes deadly infections. In otherwise healthy people, salmonellosis may cause short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhoea. Long-term complications may include severe arthritis. If you think you have illness symptoms related to salmonellosis, please contact your family doctor.
