Male Dance Fly
This image shows an approximately 0.35 inch (9 mm)-long dance fly of the species Empis livida. It is a male fly.
E. livida lives in hedge rows, feeding on nectar and on other insects. Dance flies are found across temperate and Northern Europe. Larvae are carnivorous, living in damp soil and in leaf litter.
