A central Indiana nuclear medicine company plans to build a $65 million plant in Gary that would employ up to 50 people within five years.
The Times of Munster reports (http://bit.ly/Mtj6ZG ) Fishers-based Positron Corp. will make radioactive medical imaging isotopes at the new plant that will be equipped with a 70-million-electron-volt cyclotron.
Cyclotrons are molecular particle accelerators that can be used to produce isotopes that can help physicians spot medical anomalies in the human body. Company officials say the Gary planet will boast the nation’s highest energy commercial cyclotron.
Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson says the cyclotron facility fits nicely into the city’s “meds and eds” economic development strategy.
Positron already has a Crown Point facility that’s developing products used for diagnostic and therapeutic medical procedures.
