The fifth ISC Cloud Conference with the theme “Cloud Meets HPC,” will take place on September 29 and 30, 2014, at the Marriott Hotel in Heidelberg, Germany. Once again, the conference will be chaired by Wolfgang Gentzsch, who is also the driving force behind the UberCloud HPC Experiment.
Michael M. Resch, the Director of the Stuttgart High Performance Computing Center (HLRS) will be talking about “HPC and Simulation in the Cloud – How Academia and Industry Can Benefit.” His keynote is of special interest to cloud skeptics, given that prior to 2011, Resch himself was a vocal cloud pessimist. Three years later, he feels that this technology provides a practical option for many users.
In his keynote, Resch will talk about how academic and industrial users can benefit from current cloud technologies and services. He will also present a number of projects and partnerships that highlight the potential and limitations of cloud computing in an HPC environment.
Abstract: “Cloud concepts have made services available in a variety of fields. High performance computing (HPC) is traditionally a field in which new concepts are developed and tested first. This talk will give an overview of how this idea of a cloud was turned into a concept from which both academic and industrial users can benefit. Description of a number of projects, as well as two public-private partnerships, will highlight the potential as well as the limitations of cloud concepts in an HPC environment.”
