A coal miner died Thursday of injuries suffered at Consol Energy Inc.’s Blacksville No. 2 mine, the Mine Safety and Health Administration said.

The miner was struck by a rock from the roof in the outly track area at about 3:50 p.m., according to MSHA’s Jesse Lawder. An inspector is on site and a closure order has been issued.

The Pittsburgh-based company identified the miner on Thursday night as 61-year-old William Edward Mock.

“Initial indications are that he was struck by a rock along the track haulage,” Consol spokeswoman Lynn Seay said in an email. Seal said the worker was transported to an area hospital where he died.

The mine is located in Greene County, Pa., and stretches into Monongalia County.

Seay said the company notified state and federal authorities and will cooperate in the investigation.

The mine is a large longwall operation that employs about 585 workers. Last year, it produced 4.3 million tons of coal.

In April, MSHA issued the imminent danger order at Blacksville No. 2 after an electrician was caught standing on the elevated forks of a forklift at the processing plant.

Consol said the electrician wasn’t injured and the order was terminated minutes after it was issued.
