SC15 Scientific Visualization Showcase Submissions due July 31

By R&D Editors | May 21, 2015

The Showcase Committee is very interested in creating a repository of images and clips that can be used for education, motivation, and to explain science and engineering systems, particularly in HPC activities. The Scientific Visualization and Data Analytics Showcase will be returning to SC15, The International Conference for High Performance Computing, Networking, Storage and Analysis, for its third year. Submissions are now open, and this year’s deadline is July 31, 2015.

SC15’s Visualization and Data Analytics Showcase Program is designed to provide a forum for the year’s most instrumental movies in HPC. The Showcase Committee is “very interested in creating a repository of images and clips that can be used for education, motivation, and to explain science and engineering systems, particularly in HPC activities.” Participation is encouraged — both in submissions and attendance at the conference — from people and areas that normally do not get involved with SC.

Content submitted to the Scientific Visualization Showcase must be original and must include the use of high performance computing in either the generation of the data or in the creation of the visualization/animation itself. Submissions also should support SC15’s overall theme “HPC transforms.”

Six finalists will compete for the Best Visualization Award, and each finalist will present his or her movie during a dedicated session at SC15 in a 15-minute presentation. Movies are judged based on how their movie illuminates science, by the quality of the movie, and for innovations in the process used for creating the movie.

Accepted submissions will appear as short papers on the SC15 Web page and archive, and selected entries will be displayed live in a museum/art gallery format so that conference attendees can experience and enjoy the latest in science and engineering HPC results expressed through state-of-the-art visualization technologies.

Review and selection process

Submissions must include a movie (up to 250 MB in size) and a short paper (up to four pages, including references). The short paper should describe

  • the scientific story conveyed by the movie
  • how the visualization helps scientific discovery
  • the “state-of-the-practice” information behind making the movie

Each submission will be peer-reviewed by the Visualization and Data Analytics Showcase Committee. Judging criteria will include:

  • compelling visualization

  • visualizing data involving HPC in a significant way (whether through simulation or data analytics)
  • meaningful and compelling science story

  • description of visualization techniques necessary to accomplish the movie

Submission Deadline: July 31, 2015

About SC15
SC15, sponsored by the ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) and the IEEE Computer Society, offers a complete technical program, programs for students and educators in HPC, and an exhibition that together showcase the many ways high performance computing, networking, storage and analysis lead to advances in scientific discovery, research, education and commerce. Taking place in Austin, TX, from November 15-20, 2015, this premier international conference includes a globally attended technical program, workshops, tutorials, a world class exhibit area, demonstrations and opportunities for hands-on learning.
