The Vortex data analysis and visualization tool is designed for scientists working in the areas of chemistry, biology and engineering. It is compatible with the credit-card sized computer Raspberry Pi, as well as Windows, Mac OS X and Linux, offering an alternative to spreadsheets and providing the plots and functionality required by scientists to explore and understand large sets of complex data. Researchers can load datasets with millions of data points, create high-quality graphs and produce visualizations ready for presentation or publication. It can consume data from Browser, Dotmatics’ fdata query and federation platform, and integrates OpenAstexViewer. Scientists can directly visualize chemical structures and ligand complexes in 3-D and 2-D, and can explore their data using surface and contour plotting techniques. In addition, a function for data aggregation has proved invaluable in spotting plate irregularities in screening campaigns. The software’s plots and calculations can be augmented via Python scripting, and an internal webserver allows many external applications (such as MOE or PyMol) to interact directly with the program.
