7. Stranger Things Dinosaur Sweatshirt
After a character in the Netflix series Stranger Things appeared on screen wearing a vintage-looking Brontosaurus sweatshirt, the Science Museum of Minnesota leaped at the opportunity to create and sell more. Demand soon skyrocketed, with 18,000 online orders placed in the first two days alone. The museum has since earned over half a million dollars in profit so far, and pledges to put it toward educational use. Sweatshirts and t-shirts are still available on the museum’s website, and can also be purchased at the museum’s gift shop in St. Paul.
8. Mars Rover 3D Puzzle
NASA’s Curiosity Mars rover was fully integrated and tested in the High Bay 1 cleanroom at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. It reached the Red Planet in August 2012 — since then it’s snapped “selfies” and discovered surprising minerals. Aerospace fans can construct their own replica with this kit, which comes in 116 pieces and requires no glue.
9. Charitable Donation
The Union of Concerned Scientists puts rigorous, independent science to work to solve the planet’s most pressing problems. Joining with citizens across the country, this group combines technical analysis and effective advocacy to create innovative, practical solutions for a healthy, safe, and sustainable future.
