Fractals are geometric shapes that display a property called self-similarity, where each of their parts is approximately the same as the whole. While a mathematical construct, they are found in nature. First coined in 1975 by Benoît Mandelbrot, the term fractal comes from the Latin fractus, meaning fractured.
