Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM) through its subsidiary, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., today announced that a number of leading device and network OEMs are realizing the benefits of Qualcomm Technologies’ integrated 2×2 802.11ac Wi-Fi with MU-MIMO solutions to provide premium Wi-Fi performance and improve the user experience – by providing concurrent multi-device support, virtually eliminating dead spots, reducing download times and increasing web browsing speed. The 2×2 11ac Wi-Fi technology is currently available on the Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 835 and 660 Mobile Platforms, working with companion WCN3990 solution. More than 100 device designs from leading device OEMs in China and around the world are currently leveraging the technology.
Devices that support 2×2 Wi-Fi have two antennas instead of one, offering better signal penetration and stronger coverage. With double the antennas, the Snapdragon 835 and 660 Mobile Platforms are able to provide up to twice the user throughput and deliver a significant improvement in coverage. This is especially beneficial in eliminating dead spots in houses and offices made of thick brick and concrete walls, enabling users to enjoy virtually unfettered video, faster downloads, and an excellent connectivity experience in the entire home or office. The Snapdragon 835 and 660 Mobile Platforms also support intelligent antenna sharing between LTE and Wi-Fi, so that OEMs can cost-effectively offer 2×2 Wi-Fi performance with only one additional antenna. Furthermore, the 2×2 Wi-Fi technology also supports MU-MIMO that can boost the performance in crowded networks by allowing multiple devices to be served simultaneously. The fact that 2×2 Wi-Fi in Snapdragon 835 and 660 is integrated, results in lower power consumption and cost improvements.
“Consumers expect excellent mobile experiences no matter where they are, and we are thrilled to deliver premium Wi-Fi performance and coverage through our integrated 2×2 Wi-Fi solution,” said Rahul Patel, senior vice president and general manager, Connectivity, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. “Our 10nm FF integrated 2×2 Wi-Fi technology offers differentiated performance in improved power consumption, coverage, data throughput and advanced features, outperforming competing non-integrated, discrete solutions, holding great promise particularly in highly-dense, urban environments, such as those in China. By supporting 2×2 Wi-Fi, our Snapdragon 835 and 660 Mobile Platforms are helping OEMs deliver the robust Wi-Fi coverage and fast user speeds consumers demand, while using less power.”
A number of leading Chinese smartphone and networking OEMs including vivo, Nubia and TP-LINK have begun incorporating 2×2 Wi-Fi technology on their devices to provide better Wi-Fi connectivity and performance.
“We are excited to leverage Qualcomm Technologies’ integrated industry leading 2×2 Wi-Fi solution in our smartphones to help deliver the best connectivity experience possible,” said Shi Yujian, senior vice president, vivo. “Living in dense urban environments, with concrete and brick buildings creates a number of challenges. But when it comes to connectivity, consumers should not compromise. By incorporating Qualcomm Technologies’ solution in our devices, we can now provide our customers with robust Wi-Fi coverage and much higher speeds for optimum experience.”
“Our customers today require nothing less than fast Wi-Fi connectivity and ubiquitous coverage for all their devices,” said Ni Fei, chief executive officer, Nubia. “We are committed to continuing to invest in technologies that will deliver the best connectivity experiences. By incorporating 2×2 Wi-Fi technology from Qualcomm Technologies into our devices, we are now able to provide our customers with both great house-wide Wi-Fi coverage and increased speeds.”
“TP-LINK’s networking products provide hundreds of millions of people with the Wi-Fi that fuels their increasingly connected lifestyles,” said Kevin Chen, marketing director, TP-LINK. “Great connected experiences require great Wi-Fi in the network and the smartphone. Now, our customers using devices with Qualcomm Technologies’ 2×2 Wi-Fi with TP-LINK’s leading networking solutions will be able to experience faster connections and much better coverage, so they can enjoy uninterrupted entertainment throughout their homes.”
