Every day, millions of individuals in the U.S. alone must be fed by caregivers—they find it to be an undignified, frustrating and conspicuous experience. Frequently, the individual must be fed before, after or during a meal. This ostracizes the disabled individual and places additional time pressure and stress on the caregiver.
DESiN’s Obi substitutes and simulates the functionality of a human arm during a meal; Obi selects, captures and delivers food at the command of its user. Unlike other products, the technology ensures an enjoyable and effective experience by integrating cutting-edge robotics, an iconic design, intuitive controls and personality. By advancing the state of the art, Obi, which won a 2016 R&D 100 award, increases quality of life and creates social impact far exceeding the pre-cursor products, technologies and designs.
