The Latest: New NYC Subway Cars Coming

By R&D Editors | July 18, 2016

The Latest on new subway cars coming to the New York City subway system (all times eastern):

4:30 p.m.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has unveiled designs for New York City subway cars with wider doors, Wi-Fi and phone charging stations.

The Democratic governor said Monday that the upgrades represent the greatest investments ever in the Metropolitan Transit Authority.

The $27 billion plan calls for new and upgraded subway cars and buses, better control technology and redesigned subway stations.

Cuomo has promised that the state will contribute $8.3 billion. City and federal sources will cover the rest, along with user fares.

Transit advocates say upgrades are vital for the overcrowded, aging transit system. They say that will only happen if funding promises are fully met.

A Cuomo spokesman says the state’s commitment has the force of state law.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has unveiled designs for New York City subway cars equipped with wider doors, Wi-Fi and phone charging stations — but questions remain about how the state intends to help pay for them.

The Democratic governor said Monday that the upgrades at the city’s Metropolitan Transit Authority represent the greatest mass transit investment in city history.

The $27 billion plan calls for new and upgraded subway cars and buses, better control technology and redesigned subway stations.

Cuomo says the state will contribute $8.3 billion — though only $1 billion has been allocated so far.

Transit advocates say the upgrades are vital for the city’s overcrowded, aging transit system. They say that will only happen if the state follows through on its funding promises.
