Thomson Reuters launch new analytics platform, InCites

The Intellectual Property and Science business of Thomson Reuters, a leading source of scholarly research resources, this week marked a first for the scientific community with the release of its enhanced research analytics solution, InCites, an integrated web-based platform for measuring research output and impact, monitoring trends, and benchmarking articles, journals, institutions, and people, allowing for greater accuracy in assessing global influence and better decision making. The Journal Citation Reports (JCR) and Essential Science Indicators (ESI), two globally trusted scholarly analysis solutions, have been integrated into and are now available within InCites for seamless connection across the platform.

Each year the scholarly community eagerly awaits the annual release of the JCR, the most comprehensive collection of profiles and metrics supporting deep evaluation of journal attributes and performance. With the solution’s integration into next generation InCites, users can look beyond the global influence of a specific journal with new visualizations and analysis of Journal Impact Factors that directly link to article level data for open, transparent analysis. Users can also view data on top research/researchers in ESI, the leading solution for identifying the most influential individuals, institutions, regions, publications and papers within a specific field of science.

The 2014 edition of the JCR features 10,927 journal listings in 237 disciplines; 82 countries are represented. Additionally, 39 journals were suppressed due to abnormal citation activity. Suppressions aim to ensure the integrity of the reports. This edition takes a new approach to the suppression process. Instead of suspending a suppressed journal for two years, suppressions will now last one year before a journal is re-evaluated for listing.

“This is an exciting time for both Thomson Reuters and the scientific community,” said Gordon Macomber, managing director of Thomson Reuters IP & Science. “Earlier this year we marked the 50th anniversary of the Science Citation Index—the beginning of citation analysis—and the launch of the next generation Web of Science discovery platform. Now, with the launch of next generation InCites, we are advancing the approach to research evaluation by providing users with the ability to measure each piece of the research equation—at the journal, article, individual, institutional and regional levels.”

InCites utilizes trusted content and proven citation metrics from the Web of Science as the foundation for objective analytics that evaluate output, performance and trends; understand the scope of an organization’s scholarly contributions, by individual or team; and articulate actionable outcomes to refine research priorities. Subscribers of both Web of Science and InCites will see the valuable metrics of highly cited authors, hot papers and journal impact factors embedded within search results to provide an analytics-based discovery experience. It is also the first platform to support third-party partner content for even deeper industry intelligence, such as media monitoring and integration with ranking providers.
