Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos announced a special milestone was reached with his private spaceflight company Blue Origin on Saturday.
The company was able to successfully launch and land the New Shepard reusable rocket at its facility in west Texas. The rocket reached an estimated 63 miles above the Earth before it touched back down, according to The Guardian.
Engineers activated the re-engaged rocket’s engines 3,600 feet above the platform to cause a smaller margin of error. Two experiments on board the vessel were left intact, as well.
Bezos’s Blue Origin and rival company SpaceX run by Elon Musk both hope to significantly lower the price of spaceflight.
