Leica Biosystems launches laser cassette printer for histology labs

Leica Biosystems has launched the HistoCore LIGHTNING C Laser Cassette Printer globally, with a stated printing time of 2.5 seconds per cassette and capacity for up to 600 cassettes. The Danaher company, the parent of Leica Biosystems, announced the system Sept. 16 for pathology labs seeking to automate specimen labeling and tracking.

Histology cassettes hold tissue samples during processing. The printer uses a UV laser to mark validated Leica Biosystems cassettes with text, barcodes and 2D codes. The markings support specimen identification as samples move through processing and diagnosis.

The new printer eliminates ink and ribbons, which Leica says can reduce maintenance, downtime and total ownership costs. Automated color recognition matches cassette colors to predefined templates, while compatibility with laboratory information systems supports integration into existing workflows. Leica Biosystems notes that the feature reduces manual intervention and reduces identification errors.

Accurate labeling of tissue blocks and microscope slides as essential to patient safety, helping reduce the risk of misdiagnosis from specimen identification errors, as the College of American Pathologists notes. 

“Histology laboratories are often expected to do more with limited time, space and resources, while still needing confidence that every specimen is accurately identified across the diagnostic journey,” said Anupama Mokkapati, senior vice president of core portfolio and global supply chain at Leica Biosystems, in a release.

Leica plans to demonstrate the printer at booth 607 during the National Society for Histotechnology Convention in San Antonio, Sept. 25–29.
