Hyperscalers plan to spend around $700 billion in 2026 on capex. Of that, roughly $490 billion to $520 billion has been explicitly guided by Amazon ($200B), Alphabet ($175B–$185B), and Meta ($115B–$135B) for AI. The remainder reflects analyst estimates for Microsoft, which reported $37.5 billion in a single quarter. Alphabet is financing its spending with a century bond and creative accounting while some of the technology’s own architects from Ilya Sutskever to Yann LeCun warn the current genAI paradigm may be running out of steam. The models crush the benchmarks but struggle to keep track of what year it is. And the blast radius, stranded capital, displaced workers, departing researchers, extends far beyond the companies stacking the chips.
Buying a million Lamborghinis (and financed them for six years)
Here’s a thought experiment. Imagine buying a Lamborghini, a beautiful, ferocious machine that dominates on the track. It crushes every benchmark. Magazines give it perfect scores. It looks incredible in the showroom.
Now drive it down Pico Boulevard. Traffic. Potholes. Some guy double-parked outside a taco truck. A cyclist who appears from nowhere. The Lambo wasn’t built for this. It was built to look fast and test fast. Meanwhile, a Corvette, a more pedestrian vehicle available at a fraction of the price, handles the real world just fine. And is available for a fraction of the cost.
Consider that a Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 produces 1,064 horsepower and starts at $178,000. A Lamborghini Revuelto produces 1,001 horsepower and starts north of $600,000. Or that a base Corvette at $72,000 to a base Huracan at $254,000.
What does this have to do with artificial intelligence? In AI, premium GPUs are like sports cars. And hyperscalers have expensive taste. Very expensive. As of early 2026, the NVIDIA H100 Tensor Core GPU, for instance, costs between $25,000 and $40,000 per unit to purchase. Elon Musk plans to install one million H100s and similar NVIDIA GPUs in a single data center known as the Colossus. To date, there are 200,000 already up and running. Meanwhile, the OpenAI-led Stargate project seeks to pour $500 billion into a network of sprawling data centers. It is largely debt-financed.
Why the AI spend race keeps going
In this market, each CEO faces a simple choice: invest aggressively now, or pace investment and wait for clearer returns.
The problem is strategic. If you underinvest and rivals do not, you can fall behind on capacity, talent, and customer adoption.
That asymmetry makes aggressive spending the safer personal choice, even if it leads to an industry-wide arms race.

Core point: The “fall behind” outcome is so unattractive that many leaders treat aggressive investment as insurance,
even when they expect rivals to do the same. That dynamic can push the whole sector toward costly parity.
How the spend cycle can reinforce itself
A common concern in fast-growing infrastructure markets is that financing arrangements can amplify demand signals.
The mechanism below is a general pattern, not a claim about any one company’s financials.
- Suppliers and large platforms finance the ecosystem through investments, credits, partnerships, or favorable terms.
- Customers use that support to buy capacity and hardware, often from the same suppliers or platforms.
- Near-term demand looks stronger because purchasing power is partly enabled by the supplier ecosystem.
- Market confidence rises, supporting more investment, more buildout, and more customer financing.
- Risk: if end-customer demand does not mature, the system can face renegotiations, impairments, or consolidation.

Meta is building Hyperion in Louisiana, a campus that covers more ground than many airports, financed through a $27 billion joint venture where the debt sits with a shell entity called “Beignet Investor LLC.” Amazon guided $200 billion in 2026 capex, a big bump from roughly $131 billion in 2025. Meanwhile, the company has shed tens of thousands of jobs, including many management and engineering roles.
If hyperscalers spend it, will AGI come? Who knows. But what is going to power the wave? The IEA projects data center electricity demand will match Japan’s total consumption by 2030. And the industry’s own assessment is that even this isn’t enough. Musk merged SpaceX and xAI to build data centers in orbit, SpaceX filed with the FCC for an orbital data center constellation of up to one million satellites, Google launched Project Suncatcher to put AI chips on satellites, and China is already running DeepSeek inference workloads in pressurized pods on the ocean floor. The Lamborghini dealership has gone interplanetary.
The AI models dominate on benchmarks, the “track.” Their capabilities in the real world sometimes lag when it comes to messy real-world tasks that businesses and labs actually have. They loop between bugs. They often hallucinate citations or variables when coding. They are, as OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever put it in November 2025, like a student who practiced 10,000 hours of competitive programming by memorizing every problem, and crushes the exam, but is lost in a real job. Because they never developed intuition.
Jagged intelligence: Super-smart… sometimes
“These models somehow just generalize dramatically worse than people,” Sutskever said. “It’s a very fundamental thing.”
The industry’s response to this fundamental problem: spend more. Build more data centers. Build data centers in space and in the ocean. Buy more GPUs. Issue century bonds to finance the purchase. The mantra, stripped to its essence, is: I will beat you by outspending you. I don’t care if I lose my house and my car. I will do anything not to become the next Kodak or Sears.
A top-tier GPU cluster purchased today is a frontier asset. By 2027, it’s a commodity. By 2029, it could be architecturally irrelevant. But it sits on the balance sheet at six-year depreciation.
Buying huge trawls of GPUs is becoming an expensive habit. For the first time, the hyperscalers’ aggregate capex, after buybacks and dividends, may exceed their projected cash flows, necessitating external funding.
The question few in the C-suite wants to answer: What does the math actually look like to get a return on this?
The risk is a spectrum:
